I went back to Sheboygan Falls, WI today, the town where I found the 1853 Seated Liberty half dime three weeks ago. Today I hunted the big park in town along the river, but my efforts only resulted in some clad quarters.

I then crossed a pedestrian bridge to the other side of the river planning to hunt along the shore in the woods. As I got off the bridge there was a grassy area on the top of the hill above the river. There is a power sub-station there as well.

One tree stands there and right by it I got a penny/dime signal on my ACE-250 at two inches. I took a small scoop of dirt with my shovel and just as I was lifting it up I saw a small silver object on the top of the dirt on the shovel. I picked it up and was quite surprised to find I was holding another Seated Liberty half dime.

It's an 1854-O with mint mark above the wreath. This poor little thing has had a rough life. It's bent and beaten, but is clearly an 1854. And to think it was sitting right on the ground.

There is a lot of dumped material down the hillsides along the river in this town, so I don't know if this coin was in dirt that was dumped a long time ago and the big tree grew up around it, or if it was lost there.

I've included a photo of the tree where I found the coin. The coin was found just above the piece of wood lying on the ground.

I hadn't found a Seated Liberty until this month and now I have two of them!

Congrats! I found a gold ring once in the dirt ring around the base of a tree almost exactly like what you show in the picture. Hard to say where it originated but if it was at the surface it could well have worked its way up from below the ground. In places where the ground freezes and thaws ever year (like WI) coins can get pushed up a little ever year until it pops out on top. However, it is pretty roughed up in a way that a coin lost in place and buried by time probably wouldn't be. Your other find is more of what I'd expect for a lost in place coin. We'll never know really, but fortunately it is in a safe home now!
