Hey guys ,just got back from vacationing in Salem, Massachusetts . While I was there I stopped into an old antique shop just for the heck of it . I asked one of the workers if they had any old coins . At first he sad no, then 5 minutes later another guy shows me a metal box full of Buffalo nickels . the sign on the box said Indian Nickels $1.00 each . So I take a peek . Now bear in mind I didn't have my reading glasses with me or a magnifying glass . So after a minute or so of being disgusted of not seeing anything but an Indian and a Buffalo I told him without even counting them I'll give you $30 for the whole lot. He said ok. Well now that I got them home , looking through them I see that half of them are dateless and the remainder are half dates ( last 2 digits remain ) with many MM . There was a total of 467 buff's in that box .

You did great! Almost at face! Rolls of dateless buffaloes sell for $10 all day long on ebay. I'd be restoring those dateless ones and having a blast doing it. Send me any you don't want. Am sure there's some semi-keys in there.

Wait - he had 457 nickels in the box, asking a buck apiece, and he sold them for $30 the lot? Anyway, great pickup, agree with edweather.

What method would you use to restore the dates? 437 nickels must be worth more than $30 just for the metal. I went to coin shop today and could not find one Morgan I did not have already or that was not in just good condition. Depressing, since the ones I want are so expensive anyway. The shop did have a bucket with Morgans at $35 each. They were all well circulated with no rare ones. You don't find 1893-S in the junk bucket too often.

Not a bad deal, really. Even if you dumped them the worst you would lose is $8.15, right?
Rest in Peace

This may be a bit off the subject but... did you get the metal box too? A lot of those are worth a few bucks -- some sell for quite a bit even if they are worn and dinged.

Anyway, a box of coins to search sounds like fun to me.

Sounds good to me! By the way, At least some dates can be determined without a date. I came across a dateless 1921 S a while back. It will be worth more that way than acid dated.

Yeah , really surprised he took the $30 . Now all I need to do is get some keys or semi-keys to come alive ,and I'll be sitting pretty .
The metal box came with it but no cover .

You ever watch "Pickers"? Those guys squeeze money out of rusty junk. That stuff just does not thrill me that much. Some times you can buy old books that have no value themselves, but people put documents and paper money in the books and then they are forgotten. It is hard enough to be semi-knowledgeable about one thing much less hoards of stuff which is all hard to sell retail.

Sounds like a interesting pickup.

If it was me, I would sort through the no dates to see how many have mint marks.
Those that have mint marks might have the best chance of having some
better (restored) date coins.

I'm not that good at attributing buffaloes, but I believe some dates can be determined by some feather detail or something like that.
