Like with almost every denomination of coins ever made in the US I have some but for some reason I never got hooked on Morgan dollars. I have many in plastic rolls but none in Albums or slabs. I used to have Whitman Albums for those but gave them away. All went into plastic tubes and I have no idea what they are, how many there is and since not a Morgan person, probably never will look at them again. Now that I read all this about them I now know I will leave them where they are for whoever inherits this mess.

superdave I have a question about coin shown. I see that the rim is offset on both obverse and reverse was that included as part of the VAM? If not does it make it more valuable?

Both of them are a *little* offset. The PCGS slab makes the 1921 look greater than it actually is. Neither are "out of tolerance" for a Morgan, and no additional rarity or value is added. It's pretty common.

Bryan, I blame you and Mr Super for leading me down this path and now you want me to play somewhere else .... I'm loving the journey! I have branched out from the 78's and 21's. I picked up a nice 1880-P VAM6, 8/7 "Spikes" overdate in MS. But I haven't forgotten those 78's. Here's my latest: I think I'm doing better with the pictures, too! I have an 1878 8TF VAM1 "spearpoint" in MS62 PL on the way, and dare I say it ... a possible VAM9. I'll let you know when it gets here. Oh, and so SuperDave doesn't feel left out, I have two 21-D's added to my inventory, a VAM1G and a possible VAM1O (not 10).

SuperDave was the one who lit the fire under my rear end also, my first question when I joined this forum was about a 1878 7/8TF I had and SuperDave attributed it for me (I had never heard the term VAM before) well to make a long story short....that was all she wrote. The forum was allot smaller then and we could pass information between each other without actually sparking to much interest from the other members, but now that has all changed and we have a bunch of members looking for VAM's on here now

You inspire jealousy with that VAM-1Oh, if that's what it turns out to be. I've never seen one, and as far as I know there are less than 15 in the current census. That'll give ya some bragging rights. I'm waiting on what will be, if I'm correct, a Top Pop 1921-P VAM-1E. If it is, you guys will be the first to know.

Brian, Your coin is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I also have a 1878, 7TF, Reverse of 1878, but mine is MS62 DMPL. I do not know what the VAM designation is for that coin. Other than the obvious ones, I find VAM attribution challenging and at times down right hard. I have learned more about Morgans in the last ten years than the previous thirty.

There are some serious collectors who utilize this forum. Is there anyone who uses the NGC or PCGS registries for their Morgan or Peace dollars? Does anyone specifically use the registries for their VAMs?

Bryan's modesty forbids his mentioning himself as the owner of the #2 NGC B1 Reverse Morgan Registry set. I doubt he's the only one in the Registry; just the only one I know of. I've a Registry set of Jefferson Proofs, but it'll never rank very high as I'm doing them all in PR69DCAM, ignoring the PR70's that people are second-mortgaging their houses for.

SuperDave, btw my friend, you've missed your calling. You should be writing numismatic articles and getting paid for it. This is the best presentation I've seen on a topic in quite a while. Regarding the VAM1O(Oh), I picked the coin up yesterday at a local show. I didn't know what I had at the time and had to wait until I got home to start comparing its features to the 21-D VAMs. Of course you know there are way too many 21-D VAMs with the experience those dies had. I limited my search to die breaks/cracks and ignored the scribbled tail marks VAMs ... this has no scribbling. I picked a key feature ... a die crack from the lower point of Liberty's neck to the rim intersecting with a crack from the stars on the left. This is the only VAM that comes close to this feature exhibited on my coin. Using the "spider-web" diagram, my coin may be an early die state. The break on the top of the 'A' in States is just beginning. All of the breaks on my coin are on the "spider-web", but not all of the "spider-web" cracks are on my coin. At my first opportunity, I will get some pictures and post them for your expert opinion. Thanks again for this thread!

That's a pretty impressive list. I know that those coins are hard to find in those grades. Do you collect other Morgans as well?

Is the Top 100 VAM list comprised of the 100 most populated VAM's or the most valuable? How does a VAM make the list? How often does it change?
