Hi All,

I would appreciate some feedback on this Parthian coin I am considering purchasing from V Coins. It is advertised as from Mithradatkart, 3.79 grams and 17x18 mm, Sellwood 56.6. I think the toning is a bit off but the seller says it might be due to debased silver. Maybe its the cartoonish look that is throwing me, I don't know. I would appreciate your opinions before I sink some money into this coin. Thanks.

Steve S.

Vcoin guarantees their coins unconditionally for life. If it is a fake, you are at least protected.

That said, it doesn't sit right with me either. Bob L knows these better than anyone, but I am not seeing the depth in the hair that I would expect from an issue like this one.

It is a very odd looking coin, I don't know enough about these to say either way. Bob L will know for sure.

I think it's absolutely fine, Steve. These late issues from Mithradatkart could be pretty bizarre and, yes, the silver is highly debased at this point in the game. As Shore states it in Ten Dragons, "The drachms of Phraatakes continue the stylistic deterioration in eastern mints..."

Two other Phraatakes drachms for comparison, below - also cartoonish (which is the norm), first is Schatz's, second mine.

I don't blame you for being suspicious of that coin; it looks very "off" compared to most Parthians I've seen/own. Bob knows his stuff though so between that and the fact that it's being sold on Vcoins I wouldn't be worried at all about buying it.
