Really nice examples can increase a common cent's value ten-fold. It wasn't always the case, as not too long ago defective planchets weren't desirable as anything other than a curiosity.

Just a matter of taste. Personally, I would never buy one.

Collect what makes you happy. I suspect you answer is yes and no. I really think it depends on a few factors including eye appeal. Some dates you almost can't get around the fact that a number of the cents in circulation are going to be woodies. 1980 for example has tons in circulation. No extra value there. But for 1909 S VDB where there is a significant population which are woodies, price can increase.
Personally, I like the woodies that remain smooth on the surface texture. If the surface is ridged, I would pass on the coin.

Just like toning on coins. Some enhance the color, others ruin the color to me. I prefer the white look of silver and a nice pattern of color on them. But brown toning is a deal breaker for me. So buy what you like and if you are selling a coins ask yourself: Would I buy this coin? If the answer is no, then it might be a better coin to trade with rather than sell a dud to someone.

I like them but in general the collector demand is low. Hence I won't pay anything extra.
For me die cracks are the same. In general collectors won't pay extra for them either.

There is a market for them, attractive ones are bought and sold everyday. There are collectors of almost all types of coins. Woodies do not command the highest prices of the collectables, but easily sell for over 100 x face value, (dollars on the penny).
