Hey everybody..

This is the first time I've ever posted a topic on any forum at all, so be easy on me :)

I'm a (very) amateur collector, and really enjoy searching through pocket change for varieties and errors. I assume this is simply damage from circulation, but it was still a bit peculiar to me, so curious of everyone's thoughts.

The reverse of this penny seems to be missing the "E " in the "E PLURIBUS UNUM " The bottom of the letters in "States Of" also seem to have some damage. The reason this was so strange to me is because the remainder of the coin - both obverse and reverse - is all in sharp condition.

**Edit: You can barely make out a smudged "E " now that I view the coin through the image.. but viewing through the scope in person I still can't see it.. that area is also very flat.

What could cause this? If it is just circulation damage, how could it be so specifically pinpointed to that part of the coin?

Thanks!

But then ...

John1 is an expert on cents and the many things that can happen to them.

Welcome from another Tar Heel.
I am glad to see John1 is an expert on cents because my wife claims I have no sense when I start looking at cents.

Keep in mind also that that area on the opposite side of the coin has the largest part of the design, the lower part of the bust. So that also figures for weakness of the devices. But when you see the devices appearing wider, it is usually caused by grease blocking the strike. So it could be a combination of both elements.
