I see that there is a new book coming out on Coin Photography. I am just getting started and want to photo some of my collection.

Can anyone recommend a website or certain topics in this list which would give a beginner enough information to start out taking reasonable pics. Reading the whole list would take a lot of time and my mouse finger would get sore.

Some of you do some very nice work. Thanks for the help!

Google the phrase "photographing coins." You will find a number of good references. Don't be put off by the potential expense of copy stands, special umbrellas, special lights, etc. You need a camera with macro capability and white balance, a couple of desk lamps or other light sources, and some time to play around! After some practice you will soon know how to get the best photos of copper coins, circulated silver, MS coins, and proofs. They all have different albedos (reflectivity) so they all require different set-ups.

Enjoy your pursuit of perfect coin photos. The joy of digital photography is that once you have your camera, the photos themselves are very cheap!

If you have some photo editing software that can help as well. Irfanware is a freeware download you can get from this site. It will help you crop your photos to the 600x600 pixels that work best for posting online.

Good post. I went to browncopper.com and studied the article on taking photos of coins and took notes, I found it so helpful. I have the camera I need, now must go out and get the lighting. I understand my camera a lot better now as well and can put it on the proper settings. Thank you for the post, link, and advice.

Great topic for me. I have wanted to start photographing some of my coins. I have a decent camera and a guy I work with has a copy board he does not use and is going to give me. The lighting information at browncopper.com really helped me alot. Maybe by this weekend I can actually take a few photos.
