Some of you might remember me posting about a microscope I recently got. I posted on 8-12-09,8-14 and 8-21. I gave a tip about using little rubber tips to cover the LEDS that I got from a package of peg board hooks from a discount store for less then a buck. Now I can cover one or all of the LEDS. I have been trying different lighting techniques and came up with what I think is a good idea. I bought a flexible LED light for a dollar at Dollar Daze, it's a dollar store. Then I cut the handle off a plastic milk jug and stapled one end of it. I insert the light in the open end and use a paper clip to keep it in place. I just tried it out and it should work pretty well, I still have to play around with it some more to get it to work just right. I have attached three pix to show what it looks like. Some of you might want to try this and see if it will work for you. Let us know how it works.

John,
Please excues my ignorance, as I am new to this forum.
What exactly are you trying to acheve with the lighting?
I have only been collecting coins for several months, doing photographs of coins for only a couple months, But have been experimenting with LED's for 30+ years. I might (and it is a very big might) have a better idea for you. Are you trying to vary the brightness? Just curious!

That is quite ingenious, you are using the plastic to shade the direct light? Thank you Mr Wizard!
This might work with a camera and tripod too! Might work better than a huge flexible lamp.

oldgrandpainmi,
I was having a lot of trouble controlling the on-board LED lights on my usb digital microscope,it has no built-in adjustment. So I cover all the LEDS with rubber caps and light the coins with other light sources like a flashlight or this flex light. I used the plastic milk jug handle to help eliminate the glare. If you any ideas, please let me know, I'm willing to try anything in order to make taking coin photos easier. Thanks for your interest.

I've gotten some good tips from this forum on controlling the light in my pictures. I too have a digital microscope with built in LEDs with no controls. I'm taking some good pix as the one here but the color is washed out. I'll start experimenting with what I learned here.
