Now that my interests are more focused I am disposing of some coins I bought in magpie fashion. One is this 50-cent piece.

It is quite darkly toned overall. Please take a look at the pics and give me an idea of the desirability of a toned coin like this (or undesirability too.)

The image of the reverse is closest to the actual tone. Photos are best I took of several with my iPhone. Photos of the entire slab are wretched.

It is in an ANACS slab graded EF 40.

What would be a reasonable expected price for this?

All suggestions MOST GREATLY APPRECIATED !

Overall, I'd say its a $100 coin. I actually like the originality, but feel it just made XF, and PCGS or NGC might have 35'd it.

Toning is not the problem.
Capped Bust coins seem to come that way (I'm collecting the quarters).
ANACS will hold its value down a bit.
And as Andrew99 said it may be a touch overgraded.

Thank you. It is more hopeful than I thought.

Thanks fellow collectors. I put it on ebay. (I paid $131 for it in a 2012 ebay auction.)

Very pretty coin! I still cannot believe a coin series almost 200 years old, made of a hefty piece of silver, can be had for $100 or less in most cases. Beautiful coin!

That's a tad low for retail on the bay. I would think a BIN of around what you paid and it will move quite quickly. Plus its in an OWH which has some desire in itself. ANACS nowadays will not hold the premium of a PCGS or NGC but the OWH's were from the days when the company had more respect for its grading talent.

I wasn't thinking retail on ebay, but what it would bring at a show. If it sells for $125 on ebay, after fees and shipping, you'd clear $100 or so. So, either way.

Looks like a high VF to me. Average eye appeal in my opinion. Interesting to see what it realizes.

I was thinking high VF as well, but that originality is hard to find.

$82 was not worth getting rid of this coin. I think someone got a great deal.

Sorry to hear that. I sell full time on ebay, though what I sell has nothing to do with numismatics. I started out doing a lot of auctions. Some would do great but most would do ok and some disappointingly low. After a year of doing that I went to 100% buy it now. I put the price I want and if someone is willing to pay it they buy it. I think many of my items sell for above what they might in an auction because I only need one person to really want it, not two. Most importantly, I'm not disappointed with a sale price. Yes, I do have to lower the price a bit on some items if they sit long enough, but I feel strongly that buy it now is the way to go with anything that isn't a particularly special or unusual item. As nice as your coin is, it isn't special enough to get a bidding war.

There are a lot of people that want to buy and item and not play the auction game. They might be willing to pay, for example, $100 for an item right now instead of waiting for a week to maybe or maybe not get one for $90.

Unfortunately, on this item, bidder enthusiasm did not match board member optimism.

There are a lot of selling strategies. I've been on ebay since 1997. Mostly on the stamp side. That area is dead right now. Looks like perhaps coins are suffering as well. On this item there were 98 hits (thanks probably to this thread) and 30 watchers.
