I saw few nice Redfield Morgans and Peace dollars at ANA show this weekend. Which years/mints were scarce in Redfield holders? Also, where can I find pricing on them? Thanks

I'd try a quick ebay search.

Its not really about rare dates but rare aramount holders. Black was for coins they deemed slightly circulated and below while red holders were for choice MS to 65 but the rare one is green which was reserved for coins deemed "better" than 65. I have yet to actually see a green Redfield paramount holder in hand

That said, the Redfield hoard was mapped out in detail and detailed lists do exist of date/mm's found in that basement under the coal chute. Bags were even spilled and the coins were litterally swept into dust pans and dumped back into bags.
My favorite part of the story though is the letter he left with the coins for his heirs. It told them how to keep the IRS from finding and taxing them but guess who found the letter... The IRS... I get a kick out of that every time I re-read the story

Redfield was said to be very thrifty. So thrifty in fact that he would park his old pickup truck on an incline so that he did not have to use the battery to start it. When it was time to go he would let the truck roll down the incline and he would "pop" the clutch to start his truck. My favorite story, however, is the exploding jars of canned peaches. Redfield stored canned peaches in his basement on shelves above the bags of coins. Over the years some jars exploded and the peach juice, with a high acid content, dripped down and leached into the bags and permanently stained some of his coins. The coins can be identified by the white milky streaks staining the surfaces of the coins. I've seen it mostly on Peace dollars.

I'm not sure if there is a more indivdualized list out there but here's the approximations in 1000 count bags...

Someone already died and left me a few bucks but "Bags" of Morgan dollars? Wow! How would IRS value these coins anyway. Face value is $1. I know just 20 years ago you paid the death tax on any estate over $500,000. Probate took years for a million dollar estate and the lawyer got a percentage for just doing the paperwork. I waited at least 2 years to settle an estate of less than a million all due to IRS. I would not volunteer to ever be involved with someone else's estate even if it were bags of gold. I got sued by parties to the estate. I imagine each and every coin would have to be valued by an expert to get the IRS value for tax purpose.

Be aware, don't believe the color of the holder indicating a correct/true grade. Value each coin on it's own merit.

Quote: Be aware, don't believe the color of the holder indicating a correct/true grade. Value each coin on it's own merit. This is correct. You MUST remember that at the time the Redfield coins were put in holders and sold, the "Sheldon Grading system" as we know it today had not been "codified" yet and wouldn't be for another five years.
