Hello All. I'm pretty new to the forum.

I've been a coin collector for a while and have acquired 100's of Morgan and Peace dollars over the years. I've always used the magnet test, weight test, and visual inspection to determine authenticity. With the counterfeits getting more and more sophisticated what other non-invasive techniques can I add to my arsenal to validate authenticity.

I searched for a forum for this type of advice, but did not find one unless I missed it.

Thanks in advance.

groovy. I haven't heard this word since the 70s.

For starters go to

http://www.PCGS.com/Photograde/#/Morgan/Grades

and compare side-by-side your Morgan silver dollars to these guaranteed-authentic PCGA ones.

I find that focusing in around the obverse profile of the face often yields inconsistencies in a counterfeit sample. Frequently the sharpness of the devices of a counterfeit are pale compared to an authentic dollar.

After you have exhausted all resources, hone up on your photographic skills by visiting the CCF photo forum,

and upload a couple of detailed photos for members to comment on.

Rest in Peace

The best way to avoid counterfeits is to really know what a Morgan and Peace dollar should look like all the way down to the minute details. I collect by die pairing ( VAM) and almost always know what VAM I have before I even get the coin in hand. I do hope to own a counterfeit someday but it will be one of the contemporary counterfeit micro o Morgans.http://www.vamworld.com/home

Thanks for replying mdpmedia and dave.

One of my sources for coins is a local pawn shop. I go once in a while and buy out their silver coins. I usually buy them at spot/melt value as the owner really just wants to get rid of them and have developed a working relationship with him.

Some coins are nicer than others, but I do get worried I might be getting some counterfeits every once in a while.

I'll attach some photos of my recent purchases including prices when I get a chance today.

Here's one I picked up over the weekend for $16. I got 3 more as well but they are no where near this condition. The other 3 are a bit worn, cleaned, and beat up. But can't beat the $16/each price.

Dave's advise is spot on. The best defense is a good offense! Know the designs, morgans had many different subtle changes over the years. Best way is to become a vammer. We vammers know these subtleties inside & out by nature. Nice grabs for $16. 83o is Dave's favorite. Let's see if he can nail the VAM on this one for you
