I need just one 5 øre piece to complete the series. Same for the 10 øre and the 50 øre. However... most of the specific 5 øre pieces are either rusty, worn or terribly expensive (or a combination of those). The 10 øre pieces are expensive by default as only a few thousand have been struck. Same goes for the 50 øre piece: just one year, just a few thousand, not many in good quality. Now I do have a few coins in lesser quality as 'hole fillers', but these coins are too expensive even in lower grades to pull such a trick.

But I will never fully complete my Flying Eagle cent album or my Morgan dollar album. Unless someone gives me $200K-$300K to get a 1856 Flying Eagle cent and 1895-P Morgan dollar.

That's why it's very important to carefully define the sets you collect, I guess... When I decided to put together a "Proof Type Set", I knew there was no way I was ever going to be able to afford one the perfectly mirrored the 7070 album, due to all the different varieties included in that album (multiple Indian Head cents, multiple Liberty Seated dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollars, etc.). So I purposely decided to restrict my set to one proof for each general type (one Liberty Seated dime, One Indian Head cent, etc.) I also had to decide up front to wholly ignore any coins for which there either were no proof coins minted ( Standing Liberty quarters) or for which the proofs were extremely rare and/or insanely expensive.

So, yeah, it doesn't keep me up at night knowing that I'll never own a proof Peace dollar or a proof Capped Bust half dollar. But that proof 20-cent Piece...

That's what I did for my 1 kopek type set. I know that a few of the copper types are crazy rare (1724 rectangle, 1762 drums, 1796 cipher, and obviously any patterns), so I'm not looking for them at all, but the 1750s cloud kopek and the 1800s ring kopek are clearly actual circulating types - but way too expensive for my budget (nice examples cost in the vicinity of $200).
I got lucky with the late 1720s cross kopek by finding one in silly low grade - the prices for decent examples were similar.

That sort of thing is harder for the silver issues, because there's no clear "type" disambiguation (Kleshchinov-Grishin is basically die variety, which is clearly far too narrow).
I thought I was never going to get a sword kopek - until I got one; I'd have put the Swedish Novgorod type on the "no way" list too if the first time I heard of it wasn't just after I bought one (no, seriously).
My current "way too expensive, but I need them" list for silver consists of False Dmitry, Vasily and Feodor III. My "no way unless I'm silly lucky" list is Vladislav, the Yaroslavl rebels, and pre-reform Ivan IV (and, if it's not a pattern - I'm not very sure - the round silver kopek of Peter I).

And no, I can't immediately think of any "only missing one" coin sets, sorry (aside from a few cases where I have 0/1, 1/2 or 2/3).

Only the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, the 1894S Liberty Head Dime, the 1856 Flying Eagle cent and the 1793 Large Cent. For Mercury dimes I have 10 of the 16D's in 10 completed Albums.

Missing a Japanese Trade dollar for my silver and base metal circulating Japanese type set. Since it is a $600+ coin in even remotely acceptable condition, it will probably be a hole for a very long time.

Gold is another story entirely.

I think I am missing 5 coins for my Jefferson set. I could easily finish it for less than $10, but that would taint my the fact that it is a CRH set. I probably won't ever return to CRH, so I don't know what I'm going to do about that.

Well, for my first republic Latvian silver set I'm missing only 1923 1 lats. All I know of this coin is that it is ultra super rare with no idea of mintage or past selling prices. So I consider this set complete. :)
All my other collections are still far from missing just one coin (or two ... or three).

I am tying to build an ancient Roman type set.
About 15,000 main common types; I have about 80 so far.
Only about 14,920 to go!
Simonetti and Banti have a partial corpus on the series, and is perhaps the best Krause like guide in the area they partially covered, before they gave up!
