The title says it all. For me, it's my "Proof Type Set" that I've been working on for years and I'm finally down to the last coin I need to fill the [virtual] hole. Unfortunately, that last coin is a proof 20 cent piece and finding one that appeals to me visually is probably going to cost upwards of $4000-$5000 (which will make it the most expensive coin in my collection by far). Not all of my classic proof coins are high grade, but I really want to go all out with the final coin in the set. I was hoping to maybe use all of next year's coin budget to pick one up, but my wife just recently found out she is being laid off and a lot will depend on whether she is able to find a new job. So... what about you? Anybody have an entire Lincoln Cent album filled except for the elusive 1909S VDB? Or a set of Mercury dimes missing that 1916D? Does it keep you up at night knowing that it may be years (if ever) before you can finally get that one last Liberty Seated dollar you need to finish your 7070 album?

I wish I had that problem. I need three each for the 7070, IHC, LHC, and Mercury sets. I also need four Buffaloes. Smart money says the Buffalo and Mercury sets have the best shot at getting "down to one" first.

I'm down to the 16-d merc. If/when I cross that barrier It'll likely remain slabbed, so I'll still have that problem.

No way, I am going to crack that baby and put her with her friends. Of course, mine will likely be AG at best.

1948 Canada Silver Dollar Only 18,780 minted that year.
I have 1935-1967. There are a few varieties that I could still pick up, but that 1948 will go over $1,500. So I have been looking at what NCLT and bullion I could get rid of to help in the purchase.

Actually, no, well, kind of. Assembly an UNC set of 1909-1958 Lincoln set. So, technically, yes, I AM missing the 14 D in UNC. Just upgraded the 11 S this past week. Washington quarters - yes, but not the key dates, but "semi" key dates.

Oh, just the small matter of the 14-D in UNC. Just a leeetle espensive...
I technically only need an S-VDB to complete my Lincoln set although like acloco, I am also really working on an Uncirculated set - so I really need a 15-S, an 09-S VDB and a 14-D (my current 15-S and 14-D are circulated). I will probably buy them in that order and it's gonna take awhile with my budget.
Interestingly enough, the 11-S is #1 on the upgrade list but I am trying to stick to the plan.

I am getting rid of a lot of my sets because I don't care about them. They are just BV to me, and they will remain that way, and I will casually fill holes as I get coins for BV or otherwise junk prices. So, yes, I have a lot of holes. And I am proud of it! Traditional set collecting (date and MM) just does not offer enough variety or beauty for my taste, hence my username. With that said, I am collecting a type set of Ancient Chinese spade coins. I have several holes left in that set, and they cost $$$. They show up ONLY once or twice a year in major auctions, if that. And they cost the same as a 1877 Indian cent, of which there are 250 on ebay right now. Here is one I am bidding on one in a Stack's auction: The point is, if I want to spend $$$ on a coin, I want it to be truly rare, not these pseudo-rarities that the key dates are. http://esty.ancients.info/numis/rarity.html

I am slowly putting a Gold Indian Head Quarter Eagle set together in AU-MS condition graded by NGC. I still have a few to go but that stinkin 11-D is going to be a thorn in my side for a while.

I need an S-1 (Ameri.) to finish my chain cents, An S-96 to finish my 1796 cents, an S-217 to finish my 1801 cents, and S-264 to finish my 1803 cents. I need an 1884 to finish my nickel Three Cent pieces. And an 1846, 65, and 67 to finish my Seated half dimes. Then for the common/easy ones a 16-D and 21 dime, and a 32 D and S quarter. Oh and a Hampshire D&H 63 to finish off my Hampshire Conder tokens, and I think a Wiltshire 5 to finish my Wiltshire Conder tokens.
