Visited the LCS, and they had received an influx of 19th century coins -- some beautiful bust and Seated Liberty dimes and Half Dimes, as well as a black and peeling Shield nickel, 3 Flying Eagle cents in good condition, a Two Cent Piece that looked like it had participated in an axe murder, and this:
17.2 mm, 2 grams (my Chinese scale measures a little light). I bought it for $2.00, but as I played with it, it didn't sound like silver. It was not magnetic. But I had them acid test it (in this condition, it wouldn't harm the coin) and it was not silver. I got my $2.00 back, and the coin.
So what is this? Hardly seems worth being a modern counterfeit in this condition. Could it be contemporary?
It probably was not too sharp from the beginning, but it obviously fooled a lot of people. Counterfeiters often wanted to make these things look worn. That way it gave the appearance that other people had accepted and used it.
