See pic below. I'd like to use the <$400 stand for bellows as well as the 100mm lens as pictured. Not looking to buy an enlarger stand.

As it sits, I can attach an auto bellows with an enlarging lens and take photos from dime size to dollar size, with all being center stage.

However, when using the Canon 100mm macro lens, I run into what's pictured. Camera/lens needs to be spaced out over the stage about another 2".

Can anyone recommend something that's already made, threaded 1/4"-20, that will attach to the focus rail securely as well as allow the camera to mount securely and be easily plumbed/leveled?

Any info or recommendation is greatly appreciated.

I've got the exact same set up minus the 100mm macro lens at the moment. I plan on getting either a canon or Tamron lens and using more aluminum flat stock to extend the working distance and mounting the stand to a larger base to stabilize it. You can find T6061 flat stock on ebay if not available locally.

Dave700x:

I see in your pic you've attached a longer piece of barstock as well. What's seen in my pic is 3/8" x 12 piece of bar stock; I have to go to full height to get Dollars in frame with this setup.

I don't know if I want to have pieces mounted to the top to extend it over the stage. That is, unless I can find a solid piece of 2" bar stock that won't break the bank as well as a bolt that's the right length. I'm off to search ebay....

Andy...this is a tough one. You have the problem that the center of the lens is nowhere near the center of the stage, and you can't get enough height. Putting a tripod mount onto your lens may be enough to bring the height up a bit. You could also try adding a macro focus rail between the stand and the camera. That will give you a bit more height as well as push the camera closer to the middle of the stage. Here are a couple examples:

Ray,

The height is not the problem at this point. I have enough travel distance up and down so at the highest point right now I can just barely get Ike dollars (38mm) in frame and at a lower point I can get dimes and everything in between.

If I can't get ASE's (40.6mm) in frame, I'll have to see about 1)getting a longer piece of bar stock to mount to the focus rail for more height 2)put the stage UNDER the stand, or 3)pick up one of the add-on focusing rails you linked to and figure out how to cobble together.

The issue is getting the lens out over the stage center more. I'm looking at a 1.5" x 1.5" x 2" aluminum block for $7 to try to space it out. Just need to drill a 1/4" hole through it via my drill press/vise so I can run a 1/4"-20 bolt through the focus rail, spacer block, then into the camera mounting hole. If it doesn't work, I'm only out $7.

More to come.....

The solution I made for SuperDave was to use an MZ7 mount. This was the "Santoku" stand, and I believe he still has it.

Here's an old picture of Santoku before I sold it to Dave:

Ray,

I did look into the Santoku thread. That is actually what I wanted to do. However, trying to get a junk MZ7 at a reasonable price is nearly impossible. Everything is way too much $$ for a used, serviceable one just for one needed part.

I'm still going to keep looking, though. I may luck across one for parts cheap.
Rest in Peace

Sorry andy, I got caught skimming again. I thought you needed more vertical travel. At any rate, I would make a spacer block to move your mount position back to center of the base. I would still use T6061 stock to achieve this offset.

I did the same thing. Read too much into the title...

Here's what I ended up with. Spacer block is 1.5 x 1.5 x 2". Where the cent is sitting on the stage is center frame on Canon. Not perfect center on stage, but I'm OK with it.

Now, the only problem is ASE's. Can't get them in frame as I don't have enough height. The only way I can get them in frame is to put the stage UNDER the stand and place the coin. Not a big deal, but a PITA. I figure if I want to get it back to the right way, the rail that the camera is bolted to will have to be about 14" long. What's pictured is 12". Or, I may have to by a focus rail to attach to the 12" rail/spacer block and attach the camera to it to give me a couple more inches of adjustable height.

There were spacers made by B&L that go between the base and the upright. When used as a microscope stand, if a 0.5x auxiliary lens is attached to the scope, the working distance increases. These spacers were made to allow the 0.5x auxiliaries to be used. You could do the same thing by machining a 2" tall block similar to the one you made to extend the bellows closer to the center. You'd just need to drill 4 holes for the mounting screws, and get long mounting screws to mount the upright. This method would not reduce the stiffness of the system.

I think I mentioned before that you could also get a tripod ring mount for the Canon lens. They are cheap and would raise the lens up a couple inches. Nice thing about the tripod mount is it balances the weight a bit better than the camera mount, and it also allows the lens/camera to rotate for coin framing or setting up the stand at +/-90 deg or 180deg.

Picked up one of these tripod mounts on ebay. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the lens body...too big. Working with seller on refund/replacement.
I mic'd the lens body at 69mm, the collar was ~71.5mm. From the looks of the machining marks, not a true Canon product, probably made in China. As usual, hit and miss with stuff like this on ebay.

Edit: Apparently, I need a Canon Tripod Mount Ring D.
