If you look carefully you an see what appears to be the bottom part of a 1 at the end. But I'm not sure if thats a 1 or not.

Most likely a 1924. ANACS can often determine a date when only a trace remains, as with this coin. They once confirmed a 1923-S I found in a junk bin. That coin brought nearly $200 on ebay. If your coin is a 1924 it would not be worth investing the grading fee.

I remember doing pencil etchings on faded gravestones to find information that had been worn away by weather and time. Would a similar solution work on "dateless" SLQs and buffs?

I'm not seeing a serif at the base of that numeral, so I suspect it's a 4 and not a I ...
