How can you tell if a coin has been cleaned? I just received 3 Morgans off of ebay and I really think that two of them have been cleaned. They are so shiny that it is hard to see the details, and it realls makes me mad! The moron probably cleaned the coin because he thought a shiny coin would sell better. GRRRRR!

"If you are buying a coin, there are some signs that can indicate whether it has been cleaned. A coin cleaned with an abrasive will generally have minute scratches on it, and there may be tiny specks of dirt left in the recesses of the coin.

"Copper or bronze coins that have been cleaned may have an unnatural color, perhaps looking more like a gold coin. Silver coins that have been cleaned can appear uniform in color, including the surface along the tops of the raised letters and numbers. A silver coin that has not been cleaned should have very slight variations in color across the face of the coin."

"Another process that is used to clean coins, both copper and silver is called whizzing. Whizzing is a process that uses high pressure water and a brush in a swirling motion to clean the coin. Coins that have been celaned using this process are easily detected with a 10x magnifying glass.

"The tiny scratches are usually not seen with the naked eye, however, when looking under a 10x glass the scratches are easily detected. No coins are going to endure hundreds of fine scratches in a swirlwing arrangement.

"Silver coins that have been cleaned are usually dull and sometimes the toning is left around the finer details of the coin. For example, look out for older silver coins that have a flat dull looking surface with blackish color around the small stars or other details in the coin. These coins are most likely cleaned."

Here is the like to the completed auction. I will take some pics of them tonight if I have time. The P and the S are the ones that look like they have possibly been cleaned to me.

Now that I reread the listing, maybe he is making an attempt to tell me that they have been cleaned, "3 VERY Nice clean 1921 Morgan silver dollars." (bold by me)

Too small of pics to tell for sure, but that 21S is far too "clean", not even any bag marks on the cheek....I'd bet that was polished with a harsh abrasive.
