This refers to the shape of the coin after being clipped. Oblong with rounded ends.

Is the coin in the ebay link an elliptical clip then? Doesn't look very elliptical to me.

Yes, the clip starts on top between the I and P. Continues left, as you look at the coin, around the flower and off the rim by leaf cluster. Thus leaving the coin out of round.

Stuff like that scares me. Could well be done by someone and be post Mint. Way to easy to make those. I might be wrong but I think I could make those with my bench grinder.

You might be able to make one that would fool some people, but you could never replicate the flow lines or the geometry of the clips that authenticates it. However, those pics are very small and it is impossible to even see the proper markers.

OK, I have been told that an elliptical clip is the result of a planchet error.
Think of a football shape when you think of an elliptical clip.
I understand that when blank planchets are punched from the sheets of coin metal and the process is stopped and then restarted, the alignment of the row of planchets might be punched to produce a football shaped planchet.
Think of a cookie cutter on the rolled out dough. If you have a round cookie cutter, you can cut the cookie two times but not right on the second time and the result would be an elliptical shape.

Then the planchet gets past the watchful eyes of the wide awake operator and onto the dies with the design and then it gets past there without being caught and into the big mint bags it goes.

As my sig says tho ....

wheezydog has it right and the coin that was for sale was a genuine elliptical shaped, incomplete planchet error.

So then technically it's not a clip right?

It is because what was there and struck into a coin is the remainder of what was clipped away during the planchet making process. That's why the better terminology would be a coin struck on an elliptical, incomplete planchet.
