I work in a big city and every morning I go to the same Dunkin Donuts and, for the most part, get the same thing. I also get a roll or two of each Presidential dollar that comes out for my album, and to spread them around. To be honest, I usually only spend the Prez dollars at this DD, it just works out that way, and I'm not going to hand over $10 of them for bigger purchases. I feel better handing over two or three at a time. I usually use the Express-Coffee Only line, as I don't get any other goodies there, just coffee. The same woman works the register every morning and has come to assume that I'll have 'golden dollars' every day. After a couple weeks of not having any Prez dollars to spend, I picked up more. While paying at the DD, she laughed when I pulled them out and said "You're like the Golden Dollar Bandit." Let me tell you, this makes me smile everytime I think about it. Just wanted to share that with everyone ...

I've had similar experiences and need to crack a couple rolls I have so I can spend them. You've also hit the nail on the head as to why (in part) they aren't ever going to be popular - when I want to pay for something (more than $2-$3) I would feel awkward handing the cashier and handful of prez dollars (plus I am sure their expression would not be one of joy). Still, I think the prez dollars will end up like the "Bland" dollar (a.k.a. Morgan dollar) and will be a numismatic treasure trove when the mint distributes bags of them from their vaults 100 years from now. Assuming their vaults don't burst from the load before then

They're going to have to build more vaults to hold all of them, for sure. Maybe we should start CCF Vaults Unlimited, and become vault experts!

How could we ever do away with paper money and switch to "golden dollars" anyway..... Do you know how many people normally carry around several hundred dollars with them in their wallet ? A LOT !! How are they going to carry around 16 rolls or so of coins ?........just thought I'd share that thought on that debate ! I know that doesn't fit with the "Golden Dollar Bandit" story, but........the "paper" vs. "coin" switch CAN NEVER TAKE PLACE !

You arent replacing all paper money just the singles. I don't know about you but I usually only have 4 or 5 singles at a time, much more manageable than hundreds!

This system switch that "can never take place" has been working in Canada for many years. In addition to the one dollar coin they have a 2 dollar coin as well. I would love to see the US gov't put out a bi-metal 2 dollar coin and do away with the one dollar bill

All of these countries listed use "paper money" though.......and that was my point for those discussing it in other threads. I've not heard before now, about just doing away with the ($1.00 paper bill ONLY) THAT is news to me on the debate. The "Euro" DEFINATELY HAS PAPER MONEY ! And Britain, etc. etc..... right ?... so if the debate is only about the "one dollar paper bill" then I will concede ! (but again....hadn't heard that one before)....(or didn't pay enough attention in the detail of the debate maybe) ...(my bad if that's so...it wasn't clear to me !) But I KNOW I've HEARD PEOPLE SAY "DOING AWAY WITH PAPER MONEY IN GENERAL" MANY MANY MANY.....TIMES IN OTHER THREADS !

I think the point is to stop printing just the one dollar bill and use dollar coins instead. If we are ignoring collecting aspects altogether, I wouldn't mind losing the penny and the one dollar bill (paper). It is an adjustment that is long overdue considering general inflation for the last 100 years or so.

Of course, that is what the debate has been about all along! No one is seriously considering doing away with 5s, 10s, etc- that would just be impractical right now. There are still serious flaws with an all-electronic currency system and that won't be happening for a long time. All of the other countries listed have $1 and $2 coins and the smallest note is $5. The average lifespan of a $1 in the US is about 18 months whereas a $1 coin is 30 or more years.

Really though, what happened to the Eagle family? They should make more 2.50, 5, 10, and 20 dollar coins for circulation, too.

i recently visited a local restaurant and paid with coinage she was at first caught off guard and then she was excited to look through the coins...as a matter of fact all the waitresses came over to look at her new treat...people act like they have never seen some of these great coins we have...one lady tried to tell me at a store that I couldn't use coins---i told her she was mistaken. the store was sam's club. they counted the coins all forty dollars worth. I don't do the bank dump idea as I'm not running all over creation to dump at certain banks. I simply keep the coins and gradually spend them just as I would have throughout the week anyway...mind you this doesn't work with searching hundreds of dollars worth of coins, but less than 200 bucks why not?

I once handed a cashier a shotgun roll of Presidential dollars. The idiot said that there were no Dollar Coins. I called the manager over, who straightened the cashier out. Then, still not believing the 25 dollar value of the roll, ripped it open and counted them all.
