Hi all, I was wondering, should I open my proof sets to look closer at some errors I see through the plastic. Or Should I send it in to be graded as it is in the orig.package from the mint?

You can definitely open the mint packaging. You can work your fingernail around the edge a little at a time and once you have worked the lid up, you can pry the lid off. There is no glue or anything holding the plastic together. Or a small screwdriver, but be careful to not press to hard. If you use too much pressure the entire thing will fly open. Your coins will probably hit some hard surface and get big rim dings and dents. Or worse, the screwdriver might scratch across the surface of the coins (ouch).

I could be wrong about this but I think the grading services generally grade coins individually, even proofs.

What kind of "errors" would you be referring to? The vast majority of true errors will not fit in a proof set case. Do you have a pic?

ok,I have no pictures at this time, I'm workig on downloading from my scanner but to no success!! The coin in question is in the 1987 proof set. The penny. It has what seems to be a gouge on the reverse top left side starting at the second pillar and runs northwest up through the bottom of the E, but becomes less as you go up towards the top of the D. I will open it up and describe it better whan I have it in my fingers. my real concern is that I don't want to mess the coin up by touching it and ruining the finish! Thanks for your help, I'll let you know how it turns out. P.S. I thought I read on here that PCGS will grade coins in the package?

I've never had any problems opening proof sets in the past. They are pretty much just snapped together. They can be tight though, and sometimes it appears that the plastic is fused/melted together. I don't think they have ever been glued, but I could be wrong. Once you get into the seam, they should split easily.

you are right jbuck, they are not glued or fused.

I just take a small screwdriver, and pry open one of the corners, and the rest just comes apart. Be careful, though, there are tabs in the plastic, and if you pry them gently you can get them to come apart, but if you pry too hard, youll break the tabs.
