Can anyone verify if this is a 1973 Large Bust quarter? It looks like a coin store is selling it but most of the large busts I have seen (at least in the world of coin collecting) are mint state and graded. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1973-Large-B...AOSwMtxXsk-cEdited by punman 08/17/2016 09:23 am

it is a large bust IMO. Large busts came from PL and SP sets, but also were in circulation if I remember correctly. This one must have went around before anyone found it

Agreed, the beads are almost touching the rim, and their is significantly less detail in the hair.

I'd be curious to know if the large bust variety was discovered very shortly after the release of the 1979 quarters or if it took several months? Might have even happened well into 1980? Pacificoin, do you remember?

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, the variety was known of during the mid '70s prior to 1978 because at the time I was a bank teller and remember all of us constantly searching through our tills hoping to find some. From circulation sources, they weren't common at all.

Discovered in the year of issue by Gary Lazeo who was the principal of Monarch International in Vancouver BC. First found in RCM sets. Later that year news of circulation strikes appeared. Was a front page story in Canadian Coin News back in the day. Mr Lazeo actively supported the Market of the Large Bust , buying and selling. There is a widely held theory ( Not Subtantiated ) that a lot of these RCM sets originally went to members of the RCMP.

Interesting! I hope someone finds something unusual on our 2016 coins. ...or next year's coinage for the 150th anniversary!

With all the different types of coins planned for 2017 I am quite sure we will see some good error coins.

The coin went for $174 including shipping - plus tax on top of that!

Since they were also found in circulation and not only in sets, I am wondering if anyone ever found an original roll that was 100% large bust!

I have only seen these in sets, they are numerous, most shows around 200 to 250 a set

As for circulation, RCM didn't ship coin by roll. They sold to financial institutions by bulk, multiple canvas bags each typically containing 4,000 worth $1000, equal to 100 rolls. Considering the total mintage was almost 139 million and included in that total, the rarity of the large bust circulation variety somehow mixed within, I think finding a full roll of it would be much like finding a needle in a haystack.
