I'm pretty much done with ebay anyway, but this move gets rid of one of the last vestiges of what made ebay enjoyable for me as a bidder. Oh well, everything ebay has done recently has been another nail in the coffin as far I'm concerned.

That is surprising to me that it would be worth the time and effort for a criminal to go after low priced items. But I guess if they do a high enough volume of fake 2nd chance offers, you can still steal a lot of money.

One problem I see with masking everyone's IDs is that shill bidding could go way up, because there would be no way of the general public knowing if there is shill bidding if you cannot see who is bidding. So no one would report shill bidding. It would therefore be left to the sellers to police this, yet they could be the very ones involved in shill bidding by using a second ebay account. ebay maybe does not care that much about shill bidding, as the final price would be higher, meaning more final value fee for them.

I do like seeing who else is bidding on something and I often research that other person's feedback to see what they are buying and for what price, as it helps me in figuring out how much to bid. I guess there are other ways to search, like looking at recently closed listings on similar items.

From what I can tell, this feature started in Australia last week. the only ID that is visible is the winners, and only after the auction has ended. I first noticed this on many auctions in OZ early last week.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

hmmmm... I got two emails that some people looked up my recent bids that I lost...

Hi [my user name],I am the seller of the [auction title]- item # (xxxxxxxxxxxx), and I've just been contacted by the ebay staff who informed me that the winner of this item got rejected due to security reasons (either failed to follow through on the purchase commitment or outright refused to do so). Your last auctioned bid of US $11.54 prior to being outbided is taken into consideration as ebay policy automatically proclaims you to be the winner by default. Nevertheless,I need your agreement on this so I may contact ebay to confirm your winning position otherwise I'll relist the item. If you're interested please confirm by forwarding this message to e-mail and include your name, address and ebay ID. Thank you
------------------

I also got another that looked like a 2nd chance offer..... and wow, I nearly fell for it. I emailed them about the offer. But I looked at the email again and I did not see my mom's name on the email and good thing I noticed it. I checked myebay, but I noticed it wasn't there, I thought it could have been some lag in the system, but I figured ebay wasn't that slow. Also, it had a 2005 copyright date on the email.

All the URLs correctly linked to ebay. All they wanted was my address and userID and my $94 that I did not send to them.

Although I do like to not block the ebay bidder name, due to bid shilling, but, it goes either way...

If you always go to your Messages on ebay when you receive one of these, you can't go wrong. All messages sent to you through ebay will show up in your Inbox on ebay. If a message isn't there, then it didn't come from ebay or is not legitimate.

Phishing and spoof emails should be forwarded to spoof@ebay.com.
