Is it financially better to sell a year set - P, D, S - of commemoratives or break up the set and sell as singles? 2 are UNC and I is AU. All possibly dipped over 50 yrs ago.

Thanks, Bill

It's like my grandpa use to say when we asked him if he needed anything from the store, he would yell 'depends'.

Without knowing which coins you are referring to and pictures to see any answer you get would be pure conjecture.

It all 'depends'.

I assume we are talking US classic commemoratives?

Sell separately. Nobody wakes up one day and says "Hey, I am going to drop a few grand and buy every US commemorative coin made from 1892-1950." They are going to want specific coins, and will bid higher if they aren't getting duplicates they already have. Selling the whole shebang will only attract dealers and flippers who want to make a profit.

The ONLY time to sell coins as a lot is when you have 1-2 that carry the rest, but the rest let the buyer say, "Well, it's only $10 per coin!" whereas the rest of the coins are only "worth" $7 each.

I've met a number of collectors of the classic US commemorative series who look for P-D-S sets of coins from the Oregon Trail Memorial, Texas, Boone, Arkansas, BTW and/or Carver-Washington series - in each case, they are sometimes willing to pay a small premium if the set is attractive and nicely matched (i.e., all three coins share the same visual aesthetics).

Regardless of which PDS set you are referring, a set with two UNC coins and 1 AU coin does not sound like a well-matched set that would draw a premium (unless it came with its original distribution mailer/paperwork).

If he did that today he'd get a bag full of diapers.

I think a bit more information would be great. Which coins are we talking about here? Are they supposed to be a set?

In general, I tend to buy sets when it comes to Norwegian commemorative coins, as they are cheaper as a set. An example is the commemorative set of the Lillehammer Olympics. The complete set of 12 coins goes for 2950 NOK, where each individual set of 2 coins goes for about 550 NOK. That's a good way to save 350 NOK.

We in Norway consider it less handling and administration and thus 'cheaper' for the seller to sell it this way. Also, you won't be stuck with just one of your coins for a long time. On the other hand, if investment of time and administration and so isn't an issue, then it might be profitable to sell them individually. As said, above, it all 'depends'...

As a general rule you usually make more selling items separately. Use a car, for example. You take it to a junk yard and get a few hundred dollars for it. They in turn sell off all the parts for thousands of dollars.

I think that as a general rule, it makes sense to sell them separately rather than a set as just carl says. Someone who wants a set can always buy all three (and can pick each coin), while if you sell as a set, you automatically rule out anyone looking for a single coin.

Agree, almost never a good reason to sell 3 coins like this together - and the nicer they are, the less the reason!
