http://www.ebay.com/itm/INDIA-ANCIE...=WON&trxId=0 Gandhara Janapanda dynasty c. 600-300 BC AR 1/8 Shatamana Some reading on the type: http://coinindia.com/galleries-gandhara.htmlIt's very interesting how uncertain the early phases of Indian numismatics are. This was apparently produced when the area was under Persian control, and the series only includes a number of punch-marked bars and small coins. Within the 1/8 denomination, there are only two varieties, with and without the dot in addition to the six-armed "flower" design. It was produced sometime in the time span of immediately before the Persian conquest, and the arrival of Alexander. The same seller posted a few others a week or two ago, but those topped $20. I'm pretty happy with paying less than half of that! The seller has another one that ends tomorrow if anyone wants to bite. Edited by Finn235 08/19/2016 1:56 pm

Good value coin, certainly a whole lot of interest for very little cost.
Thumbs up from me.

BCE is technically more accurate because we are stuck using a calendar system formulated by someone who forgot to carry a few 1's. Herod the Great (cited by Biblical sources as ordering the massacre of all infant boys in Bethlehem, in response to news of the birth of Jesus) died in what we today call 4 BC. Our calendar is thus at least 4 years slow in the "before Christ" cutoff; possibly as much as seven.
At any rate, thanks! I am getting more and more into these old Indian pieces, especially as a demonstration of cultural diffusion for the region at the heart of the Silk Road. It's a very steep learning curve, but fascinating stuff!

I'm glad that besides Bob, myself, and one or two others you are interested in Eastern empire coinage.

Thanks all! I had gotten burnt out on uncleaned lots of Roman coins, and the constant stream of coins from a handful of Indian sellers was just what I needed. What I have been posting was just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak... I feel that I am very close to being able to show off my top secret project soon!
