I found this in a Coinstar machine today. I suspect it's a cheap copy so I won't be too disappointed if someone tells me that. But since I know nearly nothing at all about foreign or very old coins, any help would be appreciated. I would like to know what it's supposed to be a copy of. Thanks.

The coin weighs 2.4g on my scale. (The nickel in the side by side photo weighs 5.0g on the same scale.)

Now that's an interesting find. The coin appears to be an Antonininus of the Roman Emperor Gordian III 238-244 AD. Coins of this emperor are not usually faked because they are fairly common. The black substance looks like old varnish, this was done in the past by collectors to preserve the coin. Under that it should be silver. I wouldn't attempt to remove the substance for fear of hurting the coin. This is a nice example and IMO genuine.

That certainly is a neat find in a coin star machine.

Hmmmm, not my area of collecting, but the legends look awfully "blockish" and clumsy to me. I don't see even a hint of any flow lines. I am curious what others think.

Here is an example of a genuine one for comparison

Upon a closer look the lettering does look odd. If his scale is right than the coin is light by a gram. I might have been a bit hasty earlier. I would like to see what it looks like cleaned though. A soak in acetone should remove that old varnish.
