When the year is completed and the new coinage is minted, are all the leftover coins, including the proof sets destroyed? I wish they'd sell them, but if they don't destroy them, what happens to all those coins?
Rest in Peace

Good question. I would guess the surplus coins are released into circulation since it costs a certain amount of money to mint them and, if destroyed, that cost would not be recovered, even if the coins are melted. Proof sets, I'm also guessing, are just kept until sold.

Again, I'm just speculating. It's an economic issue, so the government may not follow a logical path.

The mint and proof sets on hand are NOT destroyed any longer. They will remain until sold. Now the silver commemoratives are a different story as Congress mandates start and stop selling dates on those and silver can be melted down. The clad junk in our regular business strikes are not worth the cost of recovery. Don't bank on many sets of anything being left over this year as the mint just announced limits on mint sets, as the year is ending, and most proof sets will be long gone before Xmas season. The new nickels have been a very good draw this year, especially the buffalo, so don't look for anything to carry over in to 2006 unless there might be a silver set or two. If you haven't ordered I would suggest you do and do it quickly.

I bought 2 silver sets. One is a Christmas gift for my totally clueless nephew (he was just born this year) and one for me. Maybe I should buy more, but I try to avoid hoarding.

That said, I think the Kansas quarter is going to do very well because its design is so excellent, and natch because of its relative rarity (these coins are being snatched up by real hoarders). Does anybody know where I can get a "bag" of Kansas quarters from the Denver mint? I managed to get in under the wire and was able to buy a Philly bag from the mint, but I waited a week and the Denvers are all gone.

Well, its official! The Mint has announced a total sell out of the 2005 Buffalo nickel. If you waited to buy its now to late. Lets see if this will have any bearing on prices in the near future?
