I bought the Marine Corp Proof because I thought it was a very unique coin and I have some history the military.

Now I am receiving "junk mail" from the US mint offering me Mint Silver Proof Sets and or a subscription to same.

As a darksider, I would be interested in the groups thoughts on these mint sets.

I subscribe for the silver proof sets. They're an alternative to the regular sets in that the Kennedy half, the Statehood Quarters and the Roosevelt dime are 90% silver, whereas the regular ones are clad. I bought one for my brother's son who was born this year. The 2005 sets have 11 coins, which includes both Jefferson nickels (Bison and Ocean in View) and all five State Quarters that were issued this year, in addition to the proofs of the regularly minted Lincoln Cent, Roosevelt dime, Kennedy half and Sac dollar. If you subscribe, they charge your card and send the next year's set when it's minted. This will go on until 2008 when all of the 50 State Quarters will have been issued (and who knows what species of nickles that the mint has in store). After, the regular silver proof sets will contain 5 less coins.

I would subscribe if I knew what I wanted all the time. My wife subscribes so many items come automatically. I FORCED myself NOT to buy the Marine Corp coins and then, in the last two weeks, bought 12 of them on the secondary market. Paid a heck of a premium but decided I wanted one of each, unc. and proof, and will put the others up for sale to boost the old coin purchasing power when prices go up somewhat? Quite honestly 4 of them sold today for a very nifty profit so I don't regret doing it now. I buy silver sets every year, usually a clad proof set, but decided just this year to sell them off, and a mint set or two. I think the satin mint sets this year will be a well spent $20 in a few more months? Now, as far as subscriptions go, I will probably never do that as I tend to pick and choose as I go along and getting on line to order is no big deal.
