In the 2006 Red Book it states that a few Kennedy half pieces dated 1971-d and 1977-d were struck in silver clad by error. We have a 1971-d silver. Other than the statement in the Red Book we have been unable to find any info about this coin. Anyone know much? How many were struck... rarity.... worth? Ours is in nice cond. and if it is a rare coin we will send it in for grading.
Thanks!

I think you could tell if it was a 40% silver issue or not by weighing it. 90% halves weigh 12.5g, 40% halves weigh 11.5g, and CuNi clad halves weigh 11.3g. As far as rarity goes, I have no idea what the population or value would be.

biokemist is right, the weight of the coin is a positive way to determine authenticity of the coin,,

as for population? I have not been able to find a number for these, but my opinion is that it would be a very low number, thus rare !!

If it is a verifiable 40% 71-D no matter what the grade, I think it would be worth submitting !

The '77-D is common with about six examples known. These were struck on the 40% bicentennial planchets which had probably stuck in totes which were returned from San Francisco if memory serves.

There have been rumors of the existence of the 71 P & D 40% halfs for years though so far as I know there are no confirmed examples. Denvers do seem far more likely since the '70 half was struck there for inclusion in mint sets.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Not much to add...Breen states some 1971-D's may exist. In fact, nothing to add, since Cladking just said this! If, you in fact have one, I think you're lookin at big money![:p]
