I am finding that bidders are prepared to pay a pretty steep premium for higher grade Morgans. I mean by higher grade to be anything above AU50. I look at written sources for prices and for 1891-O in AU for example. There is no reality between a slabbed and graded coins and the prices on ebay. Whereas I found Buffalo nickels in EF condition selling for VF prices or less the Morgans in AU55 are getting close to MS60 prices. I am talking only of coins with no details or other faults. These coins must be in high demand especially the more scarce ones. The 1891-O is not scarce according to mint but it must be in MS grades. How else to explain? It jumps from about $60 in AU50 to $200 in MS60. The grades between AU50 and MS60 are closer to MS60 than AU50. What accounts for this?

Found this interesting.

Just adding an ebay search for sold slabbed 1891-O Morgan dollars in AU and up grades.

Note these are in order of lowest price first so scroll a bit to see the range.

The 91 O has lots of examples in circulated condition below AU. The coin is rare in MS 65 condition. The mint released some bags in 1962 of the 91 O as a result the coin can be easily found in MS 61 through MS 64. There are lots of these MS examples that have been slabbed. There are not many examples of this coin available in AU as there are low population counts in AU condition by NGC and PCGS. If a nice slabbed AU55 goes up for auction, you are fighting with other collectors trying to get the coin at the lower price. If you step up to MS 63 it will cost more, but there are more examples available.
