This exact coin sold at HA 14 months ago for $118 including B.P. https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-qua...Lot=1x=0&y=0I snagged it for $62 last night on the bay. I think the price I paid is more market appropriate but its an interesting study in "Right Place, Right Time" and of course how a coin, or any collectible for that matter, is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Great Southern lightened the photos so much they washed out the NCG logo on the label. I'd venture the price change is in relation to excellent marketing by HA v. poor presentation by GS.

I'd never have bought it based on the GSC photos which are terrible. They are known for manipulating lighting and photos to hide problems, but I'm not used to seeing them make such harsh manipulations that the coin looks worse. Strange, but since you found the HA ones you should be in good shape. Was this an auction or a buy it now? If an auction then this great example of what poor photos can do for the sale price of an item. Anyway, congratulations on the good deal!

The pictures look dramatically better on the Heritage site. They really didn't help themselves by manipulating the photos.

Quote: Was this an auction or a buy it now? Auction win I guess I can see the photos making a difference. I also don't believe the others bidding used the same resources I did, which were nothing profound, just a quick search of known sites for previous coin history. Obviously I got a hit which is why I watched it and made the final bid snag w/ 5 seconds remaining. Even Numismedia puts it at $90 FMV.

Seeing GSC is the seller is an automatic no-bid for me, I don't care what the photos look like or how much of a bargain the coin seems to be.
The geniuses that work there probably saw the coin, saw it was probably dark; and decided it would never sell like that, so they needed to lighten it up about 50% to bring in the really big bucks...
Even if it were some random seller other than GSC, I'd stay away just based on the photos.
That means if you're willing to gamble with bad photos, you can pick up some super hot deals, something which has always been the case, but more so with GSC. This falls into the "super hot deal" category.

GSC's raw coins are photo-enhanced to be deceptive, but they have no clue how to photograph a slabbed coin, so they scan them. How ironic. Yes there are some good deals to be had from them on slabs. One of my "lame claims to fame," I got a good deal on a slab from them too.
