Hi community.

I picked up this coin a couple of weeks ago. I usually don't buy world coins.

Are any of you familiar with this error coin? It's
Suppose to be 1893 but made with 1393 instead.

Do think it is a fake or real? I did the magnet test and weight test and both passed.

Not an error. If you look closely at the second number, you can see it is actually an 8, but the toning coincidentally hides the middle part, making it look like a 3

no, this is a known variety. also, the 3 has knobs, no way it could be an 8.

I agree - that is the error die. The coin is by no means rare. In fact the error is listed as 1393 OVER 893. There is an impression of an 8 as well, but as noted the knob ends of the three identify the error. It is only worth 2-3x the normal die type.

Thank you all for your comments. It is an interesting coin. Just wasn't sure if it was a fake or not. Like I said it passed the magnet and weight tests.

I usually never clean my coins, but with all the black build up on the coin is it worth doing some form of "harmless" cleaning? What do you suggest?

I would not clean it. I would check with a microscope to see if the green spots are over corrosion. If there is basic underlying corrosion, then cleaning with something like "e Z est" would do little harm to the coin.

As pointed out, this is a well known error in the peruvian Un Sol silver series. It has been known for many years and used to carry a nice premium over common dates back in the 1970's-80's.
