On ebay, I saw a coin British India 1884 1/4 rupee.
Hereunder the pictures.
In my opinion, it is even not UNC and has stains.
The Krause gives a price of 15$ for XF, 30$ for UNC, 600$ for Proof.
It was sold for 1500$ ! There were 49 bids for that auction !
Can somebody explain to me what is the reason for such price? Has this coin something special not indicated by the Krause?
Thank you

A combination of...

The dot above the rosette on the reverse indicates Bombay
The flower on the bottom panel of the jabot on the obverse is to the left
The tip of the wreath to the right of the top flower on the reverse is spiky rather than a bud

There may be a small "V" at the base of the bust - and it may be inverted if there is but that is another mark (or absence thereof in this case) which would help seal the variety but the image is too small to see.

If all of the above are true thin it's a very rare variety.

@Bacchus2
OK, but in which catalogue ( specialized or not) can be found these varieties, with their estimated prices?

The inforamtion came from a book called "The Uniform Coinage of India 1835-1947". It gives prices for most coins but not for rare varieties and even then the prices that it does give can be out of date.
