What would be a good price for a 1901-S Morgan in AU58 that is slabbed and graded by PCGS?

I would expect to pay around $280 for a nice example. I noticed one sold yesterday in auction on ebay for $310 and the ebay BIN's have sold in the last month for around $350.

I bought that 1901-S for $310 you saw on ebay. I did not want to pay that much but I made a high maximum bid of $330 to scare off rivals. AU50 is $200 and I just guessed what a AU58 might fetch since the MS60 is $475 or thereabouts. What did you think of the example I bought for $310? No need to spare my feelings. My public bid was $280 but I got outbid. I guess I would have paid it. I wonder about 1896-S and why this Morgan is so expensive?
Was this coin melted down or something? I see mintage of 5 million but price just soars after AU50 and even AU50 is way over $700. Same with 1903-0 with price just high to me in all grades for a coin with 4.4 million mintage. It seems that the Morgans of early 20th century that were minted "S" or "O" have a premium on them. Try buying 1904-S or 1903-S and you will pay dearly for AU and above. Mintage is low but not that low.

I looked at the 1901 S and was trying to figure out why the bid went to $310. The coin has a soft strike that was common for the date, but has very few marks for a AU58. The coin appeared to be a dark grey from the photos. My concern with the coin was the light color blotchy spots on both side of the coin. My first thought was the coin may have been dipped to remove some dark toning. I would have to see the coin in hand for a final judgement.

On the 96S most all the coins went into circulation from the mint. A lot of the MS coins came from the Redfield hoard. The coin is difficult to find above XF45 and the MS coins are scarce and expensive. I tried to buy a AU58 96S for a couple of years as I lost out in a couple of auctions. I finally gave up and settled on a XF45. If I ever decide to upgrade, this would be one date that I would like a second chance at.

The trouble with buying online even for graded coins is that you can't see in hand. I look for coins that are graded by PCGS and have no details or have not been cleaned. I agree with you about the 96-S and would buy a EF45 coin if I could get one at decent price. I start to retch at paying $200 for EF Morgan but I know if I ever want to complete a set I will probably buy coins at VF such as the Morgans from early to mid 1890's. If I can't get decent looking coins to fill holes then I might just leave them.
