Has anyone ever seen one of these?

The claim is that there are only 10 known.

This one is in a PCGS holder. I've never seen one before.

This did not happen at the mint.
Look at the bulge on the Queen's neck.
Counterstamped coins are not varieties.

I question the authenticity of it...

CV you're much more of an expert than I am on this subject area but one thing I have noticed with all J.O.P. dollars is that there was never any damage to the other side of the coin even with the JOP stamp.

If the same individual who put the JOP stamps on did this counterstamp wouldn't the same techniques be implored? Course it is a different and larger counter stamp which might now account for the damage.

Sorry for the rant I'm just a bit of a skeptic

Never really understood the collecting of the JOP strikes, one would guess at some price point they would be worth faking, also one could assume this is a form of defacing a currency

Commemorative issue. Only 10 pieces were struck

This statement may mislead the unaware into believing this was done by the mint. If they know how many were struck they know their origin. Shame on the auctioneers for putting lipstick on a pig, very unprofessional, yet they manage to do it auction after auction.

Joseph Oliva Patenaude died on May 9, 1956, and these coins almost certainly were struck by someone to commemorate his death.

PCGS population report does confirm at least 10 exist, 9 in MS63 and 1 in MS62.

They were certainly stamped to commemorate his death.
But when? And by who?
Without that information it's quite possible they were stamped very recently.
I don't believe the origin of the JOP dollars was widely known until a few years after his death.

No matter when or by whom it was stamped, it's still not a variety.

These are probably more modern than we think. Agree with others that the "JOP " Silver dollars should not be in the Standard Catalog or the Variety section. There are more of an exonumic item . Simply counter stamps that have been researched.
The piece in the TCNC auction is probably a manufacture by the person or persons who purchased all of PATENAUDES jewellery punches and related tools. Bought a bunch of 1956 BU dollars and made some " Commemoratives". Yet another fine example of the major TPG's certifying anything you want.

What's to stop anyone else from getting a punch and doing the same. $1600 wow! fool and his money. Same with the JOP wouldn't take much to duplicate the coin mutilation.
