Mexico didn't make Pillar Dollars in 1772, but this coin purports to be from Lima, Peru and is really quite close to what regal coins look like. The dies are different than for Mexico. I do see some things that raise red flags but I wondered what tipped the scales for you to say this is an obvious fake?

Pistareen : fixed my title. As to what tipped me - I'm too used to see those low quality copies, they sell for a buck or two in China . Flat / dull field, almost no denticles, details missing sharpness, etc .

I wouldn't exactly call them low quality copies. We are just very used to seeing them, but when they first came around even seasoned collectors were fooled at first, because everyone was mostly used to seeing low quality flea market type copies. These are comparatively high quality and often made of solid silver

Indeed - I called those low quality compared to the better one they now make. I was among those fooled by those copies when I started, indeed.

I posted this Lima 1772 double-dot a while ago in this forum. https://goccf.com/t/242490&SearchTerms=lima,1772I was concerned about it authenticity as I was aware that fakes exist of this specific variety (8 R, 1772, double dot) . The overall opinions were positive when I posted it.
