This is a doubled die, but the common one from all three mints. It is master die doubling. very common to find in a large percentage of coins from that year. Here is what to look for on this:

Thanks Coop. Happy to find one, even if it is common. One more off my want list.

What Coop means is that over 60% of cents minted in 1972 will have this doubling. It isn't worth any more than any other 1972 cent. You are learning what to look for and that's the important part. Keep looking and you'll find a rare one!

But at least your eye spotted this example, so when the valuable one comes along you will see it.

As you know Coop it's taken me almost a year to recognize one (maybe longer). Slow learner I guess, but happy that I now know what they look like. Thanks folks.

Some people have collected coins for years and still don't know what to look for. Take some time and learn about the minting process and how doubled dies are created, once you learn that, you will know what to look for and how to recognize certain features. You will also learn how to recognize minting errors from damaged coins.

That is something I've been meaning to do cwb, but every time I get on the computer I plug the scope in and start searching. Error/Variety hunting sure is addictive.

Hey Earl, I hope the storm isn't beating you up to much. I recommend that for every hour you roll search you research two. There are nine classes of doubled dies to learn and a bunch more non collectable doubling. If you research first you will know what to look for. Get yourself a CPG and read read read. Good luck. A quick way to research a certain years of cents is to look at coppercoins.com, then you have an idea what is already known out there for that year. RPMs and doubled dies. Other coins check Variety Vista Wexler's die varieties before you start searching. If you have an assortment. so a quick search of the time range of your coins and see what to look for. (some doubled dies appear over and over on different years. The strongest ones may be a one time thing. but know what to look for is a great start)

Thanks guys. I do need to start doing some studying, instead of just running blind.
John, we are in great shape here. Far enough East that were not being effected much. Couple squall lines, maybe a little more rain tonight. West coast is getting it pretty good.
