What if Morgan dollars were not silver? Would these popular coins not have as much appeal if they were nickel?

For me YES ! The Morgan would still have my attention in a major way because it represents the "Old West" perfectly ! And I'm a big big fan........That "Old West" Morgan silver dollar just has a neat historical "ring" to it ! And if it "wasn't silver...well.....it may not have been the historical popular coin that it was then/now so that's kind of hard to say I guess. Nickel or Silver ....."I" would seek them out still though.
Yeah....it would be a little less cool if they're "value" was in the crapper, but I'd still like em'.......

If they weren't silver, I doubt very much they'd have near the popularity they do today. People like to have that chunk of collectible silver in their hands.

Keep in mind that they were minted with the main purpose to use up the huge amounts of silver being mined at the time. Many of the coins never really circulated and stayed behind in bags and were eventually melted.

I prefer coins made from silver, gold and to a lesser extent, copper.

I love the design of the Morgan so I would be hard pressed not to have at least a few.

Listen to me! I only have 3 of them as it is!

Not too me either, it would be just another large nickel coin. I think if the IKE was silver it would still be in use today.

They would not hold as much appeal to me if they were not silver .

as for the old west ! I think many more Seated coins circulated during that time frame than morgans !

I like the Ike, but I would love it if it was 90% or even 40% clad.

Rick.......
You're absolutely right, as per usual, but .......it always seemed to me that that coin is "glorifyied" in the western movies....from John Wayne and Gunsmoke and Eastwood to Capt. Augustus McCrea ..(Robert Duvall)..in Lonesome Dove....they're always flippin' that Morgan around in bars and stables and bank robberies........etc.etc.etc....It just seems more commonly associated with the Old West and more people have heard of the old Morgan silver dollar today than all the other "seated" coins put together....
I don't know, it just seemed more "popular" than any lower denominations that were more common and in higher mintages.
Of course more people would "not" have had Morgans, because there would have been overwhelmingly more POOR PEOPLE ! But, on the other hand.....the 'movers & shakers'......the richer/important/famous people and gamblers, cowtowns, and saloons, etc...would have helped to make the Morgan silver dollar famous ....do you think that analogy would be agreeable ?

I can just imagine sitting at a game of 7 stud and flipping a big 'ol Morgan out into the pot, "THUNK!"

No....not "in" the card game ! But when he paid the Livery owner for his horse to be brought around....or when he tipped somebody for doing something for him.......or the famous target shooters winning a expensive rifle by hitting one thrown up in the air....or........when he would have......awwwww forget it ! Ha Ha !! Apparantly this is an uphill battle I'm waging here ! Sheeeeeesh !

Im sure that to some degree the morgan was associated with the old west ,, 1878 saw many of the typical scenes from the movies ,, My only point was that the old west took in times much sooner date wise ,, the 1949 Cal. gold rush, Custers last stand at little Big horn 1876 , Buffalo Bill was already a legend by then ,I mean when I think about it my Grandfather was born in 1878 most of the west had been pretty much tamed by then .

Here is another thought. Just how many would be going nutty with Morgans if not only were they a Nickel Coin but what if the Mint started to produce them again instead of the baby dollars?
So that we would now have all new dollar coins the Morgans again.
Even if Silver I wonder how that would dent the older ones.
Anyone remember when in the 70's they stopped making convertible cars. Then in the 80's they started again. Prices went up, up, up and then down, down, down.

I tend to think its the size and weight (not to mention the beautiful design on the Morgan dollar) that makes them so popular. But I am glad to know I am in the minority for a change when it comes to these Morgans
