Does this look like mint damage or do you think this may have been done taking this proof out of the packaging? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It does not really matter either way, damage is damage and only serves to devalue the coin. Even if it occurred at the Mint, there is no way to prove it once removed from Mint packaging.

True...that is a good point and that is why I am not listing this coin...but I still wondering if this could be mint damage? Are they really that careless with coins packaged for proof coins? I would think coins being packaged for proof sales would be handled with extreme care so personally I think this is after the mint damage...?

Not sure that's damage. From the photo it almost looks like it has been struck through someting fiberous which has tride to fall away but is still attached by a few fibers.

It almost looks like glue or part of the dealing of the cello. (If this year had cello?) But I agree that this is a struck through and not damaged.

Why is there a total lack of any detail on the torch & leaves? With out better pictures it looks more like damage.I could be wrong but given the pictures supplied that's what I'm going with. The right side of the D looks more like a scrape along with the 2 parallel lines on the rim beneath the D

Well proof coins are struck twice. So the first strike may have had the object on the bottom of the torch and the second time on the 'D' on DIME? Or vise versa?

So Coop are you saying you believe this might have been caused at the mint? That is my belief also. This came out of the mint packaging looking like this so that is what I assumed. btw I watched some of your videos...will watch the rest later, some great info there...

Yes mint damaged. Perhaps the same struck through, made two marks on the same coin.

The frosting of the dies make them look that way. I prefer the pre 70's proof coins better. The frosting makes it a lot harder to find doubled dies on them.
