Hi all!

Im a starting collector with a query.

I mostly have UK coins and I came across a gold coloured 1 pence piece, year 2000. Does anyone know anything about these?

Thank you

It could be an off-metal strike. See if it's attracted to a magnet. The standard penny is copper plated steel.

It is magentic, I checked that first. Just wondering if its a common thing for copper plated coins to have a different colour

No it's not. My best guess is that it's been sprayed or plated.

just some science experiment by school kids or something of the like. sadly not an error.

(note that the coin has the underlying original color showing on the high points)
