Hey all,

Does anyone know any good coin markets, coin shops and/or charity/thrift/secondhand stores in Frankfurt am Main area or Mainz in Germany?

I'll have a few days there soon and would love to visit a few if possible,

Thanks

@molydeii, there is a post in this same section from @ultrarant where he goes into some detail about coin shops in many areas of the world. I don't know if he covers Frankfurt or Mainz, but his post is worth looking at even if you don't find your two German cities on there.

@spence, thank you for the tip, I've gone through it, it covers Germany, but lack to cover Franfurt area. Germany is a way huge country (at least for us non-Americans:)) it's very different from city to city. I recall Berlin has lovely outdoor coin markets at bargain prices, and Munich has a very good shop close to the rail stati#305;n, but I lack to find information online, so I decided to ask to here. I am quite into secondhand shop and charity shopping (I enjoy going through paintings there, it'S something we don't have here in Turkey) so maybe someone knows a few good shops.

Thanks a lot :)

Ok sorry for the false lead. Here is an old CCF thread talking about coin shops in Frankfurt:

to the USA coin forums. How are the coin stores, if any, in Turkey?
Amazing though but I've never even seen a coin from Turkey.

@just_carl have I ventrued to the US coin part of the forum, wow I must be lost. :) wow really! you haven't seen one single coin from Turkey before? I always thought Republic of Turkey coin mintages are so high, they're always abundant everywhere. You surprised me. If you give me your mailing address, I will be happy to send you, totally for free, a few samples of what we use here, an what we used to use.

@ultrarant tusen takk. I suppose this and "hej" are the only Norwegian words I remember. However I might be wrong too. At one point of my life, I was able to ask for a coffee in Swedish, yet usually people used to ask whether I am Italian. I will see if I could make to some of those shops to buy a few, rather affordable coins, from Imperial era of Germany to fill up some spots.

@just_carl There aren't many coin stores still operating in Istanbul. There are virtual marketplaces (called a mezat in Turkey that usually serious collectors buy from. They are quite similar to ebay, yet owned and operated by individual numismatic companies.

There is a store in Besiktas in Istanbul (actually a shop in front of the mint itself in Be#351;ikta#351; that sells official mint products, such as NCLT, silver 1 ounce coins and commemoratives, yet after the silver boom in 2011-12, the price of 1 ounce cins has risen sharply, and never has fallen back. Many Tukish collectors stopped collecting those, back when the prices weren't lowered and arranged en par with the silver prices.

There still are a few shops here and there, usually in touristic downtown areas, but prices seem to vary a lot, and just like in Germany, chance of owners speaking English is quite low. I have heard that there are several numismatics shops in the covered bazaar in Istanbul, but actually I have never been to the covered bazaar myself in the last 10 years.

Bullion gold is very easy to obtain from jewellery shops scattered almst anywhere in the city, there is always more than one in every high street across every single town in Turkey. Buying bullion gold can be a good idea beacuse the premium is usually just a few dollars per gram (a full gram) when buying Turkish sovereigns (cumhuriyet altini) which comes in several types (a quarter, 1,74gr, a half, 3,5gr, a full 7gr, a 2 1/2 17,5gr, and a fiver 35gr). They're 22ct. gold and seen as an investment in here among the locals.
