In my searches for Japanese-associated WWII-era notes, I've noticed quite a few being sold with red stains across several notes, often clearly from the same incident. My first thought is that it's blood, given my bias associating the banknotes with the war(s), but I have no idea how many of these notes were near the violence. I know many soldiers brought back notes like these to their native countries as souvenirs, so it has me thinking. Has anyone seen notes like these? Could it be blood or some other substance? Any other thoughts are welcome!

Here are a few examples:

It is more likely "foxing", which is produced by mold, especially prevalent in warm, humid climates.

There are many ways that banknotes can be stained if they are not stored properly.
Rest in Peace

Maybe some crime scene luminol and a black light? It could be blood but it could be some tampering on their part? Who knows for sure?

Could be mildew. Could be rust. Could be any number of foreign substances.
