Hi all,

first of all I'd like to apologize for the poor photo quality but I am on vacation and do not have time and equipment to provide something better.

Today I have bought several banknotes and among them are 2 pieces that I cannot identify.

The first one is a Greek 50 Drachmai 1939 banknote with a stamp on it, saying "Reichssicherheitshauptamt", German eagle in the center with swastika in its claws,

The second one is a German 2 Billion Mark 1923 note which I have never seen before.

I cannot find any information on these two banknotes online so if anyone of you knows something it would be great. I bought them from a dealer on a flea-market that has tons of banknotes and among many common pieces there are some rare ones as well. I just got a German East Africa 1916 Rupie for 4,50 € today and tomorrow the dealer wants to bringt plenty of silver coins from Italy, San Marino and Vatican - 5 € each!

So I will be heading there tomorrow again and would be really happy if someone has some information on these banknotes :)

After getting back home I'll also make a separate thread to show all my acquisitions from this journey through Italy.

Thanks in advance and tanti saluti di Firenze ;)

The second note is a fake. Someone has bleached away the centre of a genuine note (leaving the purple fringe) and stamped the red stamp into the blank area. Impossible to say if it was done back in 1923 or more recently, but probably recent (since it's an awful lot of trouble to go through for a note that would likely have become worthless by the time the ink dried).

Be careful at the flea market. Sorry to say, but they can be a source of counterfeit notes and coinage, and this may have reached down to the flea market level you are visiting. I would look very carefully at your GEA Rupie note, for instance.

The Greek note is genuine but the stamp is not original.

Copies of Nazi era rubber stamps are widely available. They were used to fake postal cancellations on German Feldpost letters. The fakers have also put stamps on paper money from many countries (including inexplicably putting Nazi stamps on Japanese invasion money for the Philippines.

Thank you for your help. I have read about these fake Nazi stamps before so I am not really surprised and the fact that I did not find anything similar online made me at least a little suspicous.

I'll probably need to be a bit more careful when it comes to banknotes and I even think that the seller does not even know there are fakes in her album. You can buy German D-Mark coins (regular circulating issues in copper-nickel, definitely no fake) for below face value, the same with Australian and Canadian dollars.

Anyway, thanks for helping me out with these banknotes. I'll be more careful when browsing through these albums.

The only place online you will find the Nazi stamps on banknotes is on ebay where they are being hawked by unscrupulous sellers.
