So I picked up this 1983-S Olympic proof dollar (impaired) from the junk Commemoratives box at the LCS last week. The details look ok. Thickness and diameter ok. Reeding is spot on, and has a beautiful silver ring. Not magnetic, and the neodynium magnet slides down slowly as it should. It is, however, slightly underweight, at 26.53 grams.

That being said, what are the chances of it being counterfeit, due to its weight? Do many counterfeits exist of the modern commemorative series?

EDIT: It also checks out good with the Bullion Test app for Android.

Difficult to know today. China will counterfeit almost anything. Possibly even a garbage dump.

I think the weight is within tolerance, but would appreciate a more expert opinion on that.

The tolerance for a US silver dollar with a weight specification of 26.73 grams (the weight of modern US commemorative silver dollars) is +/- 0.389 grams.

Your coin is 0.20 grams underweight, so it is well within tolerance limits.

As your images are slightly blurry, it is difficult to assess if there are any small design inconsistencies that would suggest a counterfeit, but it appears to be OK. It is highly likely that the coin is genuine.

If the coin is a .999 silver counterfeit, it is more valuable than a coin silver genuine impaired proof.

If you were counterfeiting this coin, you wouldn't use silver. I am as worried about counterfeits as anyone, but I still think this is very unlikely.

Bullion Test app?

I just looked that up and have to say I'm dubious.

I, too, am interested in any proof this "bullion testing app" works.

I saw a machine made by Sigma Metalytics that works through capsules, etc., which seems like the real deal, but I'm not smart enough to know.
