Hello,
I found this 1985 Jefferson nickel some time ago, and have been trying to figure it out. On first inspection, I thought maybe it was a Die Cud that had been soaked in nitric acid, but there are other issues as well. First, the " Cud" is actually a perfect match for the chip in the edge adjacent to it. Second, the rest of the field doesn't seem to show the same pitting effects (though the coin could have been rotated on its edge in the acid, I suppose). Third, there is an even indentation running almost perfectly along the center of the edge. Is this possible PMD, and if so what do you think could have caused this? I've found Die Cuds in my change before, but nothing this interesting (or ugly). I have more similar photos, but this should give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Thanks for any help you can give

The groove around the outside edge and the tapered edge around the circumference lead me to think it was once encased. The " Cud" is damage.

That is just a slice off the rim that was transferred to the obverse. PSD. This coin is pretty beat up.
