I made an order for 2x 2016 Baby Coin sets almost a month ago with the a $10 off coupon. I received them almost a month ago as well.

I got letters from the Mint recently that they were not able to charge my credit card and that payment needed to be made, both via email and lettermail.

How does this happen? How does a supposedly large corporation like the Royal Canadian Mint make a mistake like this and ship out items to people without even confirming payment was made? This was obviously a poor payment processing system.

1) I called them and told them I wanted to pay for my order as I've been receiving these letters from them. Because the account was in my sister's name, they said they would need to speak to her and not me. Are these people dumb? I have spent 20 minutes on the line waiting for an agent. I am not ordering any coins, I am simply calling them to GIVE THEM CASH for a mistake on their part and they are telling me they won't speak to me? Obviously I was not happy at all.

2) The amount they were quoting I owed was the full amount with no coupon. They said their screen doesn't show any coupons and that the full amount was owed. heck no I was not going to pay the full amount; I was going to pay the amount I contractually agreed to when I bought the coins. I told them my mint.ca Account Overview interface clearly showed "Discount -10.00" How does their CSR interface and a customer's interface show different amounts? What kind of shoddy computer system are they running? They said they required proof so it's basically insinuated they don't trust me. He would not give me the discount unless I sent him a copy of my email order confirmation. Luckily, I still had it saved. What if I had not saved it?

3) Email proof was not enough. He demanded that I produce the coupon code. He repeated asked for the code, not to enter into the computer to process the sale but to "check and confirm that it was valid for my order". I repeatedly told him that I wouldn't remember a random coupon code from a month ago. And regardless if it was valid or not, the system accepted the code and a contract was rendered.

Regardless, I was one of the Royal Canadian Mint's big spenders with over $5000 a year in coin sales from them (as I am a VIP at Canadian Coin & Currency). Not to be confused, I have received excellent service at Canadian Coin & Currency store and http://www.cdncoin.com. But the Royal Canadian Mint employee I dealt with was as dumb as a rock.

I was excited over the 2017 releases for the Sequecentennial and I was definitely planning to purchase the entire 5oz 1967-2017 coin set. I'm no longer buying anything from them with the slump in coin popularity and being treated like dirt over what amounted to "$30" and making it seem like I wanted to scam $10 from their dumpy organization. Idiots. Especially CSR levesquejc@mint.ca

A couple of years ago I got a similar letter as you: cannot charge your credit and you must make alternative payment.
The difference is they won't ship until they received payment. Strange they sent you a request for money AFTER sending the coin. Maybe because its a low value item? Can't imagine them sending out the gold Star Trek without payment.

Is it a rumour or is there really a 5 oz 1967 set coming out?

Hey it was confirmed to me by CdnCoin when I asked them by email.

The email actually came by Bromberg himself, the Shopping Channel coin salesman.

Seeing as he commissioned the 5oz sets for both 2015, 2016. There's no reason to not believe him. :P

Could you imagine if a pizza guy showed up and asked you to pay for a pizza you ordered a month earlier?

Having single Self Service Portal, aka mint.ca, and probably single Customer Management front-end system (for CSRs), our dear Mint has two different billing systems (that could be overlapping) to support different product catalogues.

The older one - invoices us for the "core" Mint products - circulation coins, and the newer - is much more flexible and supports variety of NCLT and probably more.

Have you put attention, which archaic invoices come to you from the circulation packs purchases?
So I believe, the older system has more room for errors, related to coupons, discounts and in general.

With all being said above, there is no justification to CSRs total un-proffesionalism.

Btw, surely they have internal online (intranet) helping system, which they use, when need to do in all the cases. Alternatively, they can raise a hand or give a call to "pro-" or shift manager. Probably all these were unavailable that moment, and CSRs just stuck....

I would have escalated that to his supervisor pretty rapidly, myself. Often the supervisor is as bad, or worse, but at least they're usually more familiar with their employer policies (and workarounds)... It usually beats banging your head against a wall.

Rest in Peace

That does sound like stirring the pot, but for such a low value item, they would likely drop it, had you not already admitted to receiving them.

I've often questioned my rep if I received something or not. As no signature is required on items under $100. I keep it honest, and more often than not, it's been 'stashed' by my wife in a different spot. On one item recently, he did send me a replacement. (as opposed to a refund)

can't comment on the level of service you received,

but it is possible that your initial credit card transaction was approved & order sent off for shipping - then reversed by your credit card provider (and not the mint) for any number of reasons (like names or addresses not matching accounts).

I had a similar situation a few years back albeit with far less anxiety.
The credit card I registered was a debit visa and it wasn't until I mentioned that when I found out the Mint won't take debit visa.

Keep in mind your dealing with the governmint here .. You may have just had a run in with a nepotistic, or just plain stupid or maybe just simply a naive or inexperienced hire on. That, and some people just suck at customer service and have no business doing it.

Sometimes a bunch of different thing all go wrong at the same time too.
