I've heard of later versions of coins being on wrong planchets, like a 1965 quarter being on silver....but has anyone heard of the reverse?

That is about a gram low, but there's considerable wear to the poor guy. However, I can't think of any other suitable planchets for a coin of that size. I think it's just on the low side of normal.

It looks like a parking lot coin.

6.25 grams is the nominal weight with a roughly 0.20 gram tolerance out of the mint. Assuming your scale is accurate this coin is on the very low end of tolerance for a quarter with that level of wear. Has any of the reeding been shaved?

Nothing really extraordinary jumps out either way though.

From the surfaces I would suspect and acid soaking.

Surprising. Not that much detail missing, really. Can you confirm accuracy of the scale with a different example?

Sorry for late reply, just got home. Reeds are not shaved off at all, there still there and defined. The details o feel are way to strong for a acid bath and if you notice the words and numbers show no sign of acid or major wear damage.

About to send sCale pic with diffrent coin for verification.

The details are a little mushy and the surfaces appear etched, exactly what I would expect an acid soaked coin to look like.

Hmm well it is a 1961 quarter so unless that's a $3 soda you're getting I'd make alternate plans.
