I throw all my change in a tin and sort through it every now and then. Haven't sorted in about 6 months and found this this morning.

Good job! Once I was a cashier and I got to open lots of rolls. Always found interesting things in my till. Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, Kennedy Silvers, SBA and Ikes, wheat cents including steelies. It was great!

A Merc? Of course for Mercury, that makes more sense, I'm not at all familiar with US coin terms so called it Liberty because it was so prominent on the coin, I'll be changing that directly lol.
I do see a fair bit of foreign coins aside from US in my change, mostly caribbean which hides easily with QEII on it, at first glance I only saw the reverse and assumed thats what it was (poor eyesight too lol) took out the magnifier to read what country and almost fainted when I saw United States and 1943!!

I find quite a bit of Caribean coins here in New York too. Mostly Bahama and Bermuda, but the occassional Jamican sneaks in. I always get excited at first glance thinking its a Canadian (started actively collecting Circualting Canadians just a few weeks back) but I have keep them all and have maybe a dozen or so from the islands.

Oh and you called the dime by its correct name---Winged Liberty Head Dime. " Mercury dime" is mis-correctly its common term. Same goes with the "Buffalo" and "V" Nickel....Indian Head Nickel and Liberty Head Nickel. There are a few more out there too. Funny how these things work out, misnamed a hundred years ago and we still call it that today!

Stewie,

Actually, the "most correct" term for this type of dime is Winged Liberty Head.

The design was never intended to be the Roman god Mercury, but the winged hat/helmet led to it receiving the nickname and it has stuck through the years.

GREAT find for Canada! A long time ago, probably back in the 80s, when silver was still nowhere to be found, I was using a cheap metal detector on a baseball field. didn't find anything buried, but sitting right on the surface on the pitcher's mound was a '43 Mercury! This reminded me of that story
