Last month I found an email announcing a "major" auction and having some free time I perused the offerings.
Very nice ! I placed a few low ball bids and moved on with life.
Earlier this month while I spent some morning hours catching up with overdue chores I heard my phone signal an email. Usually I don't bother but fate led me to look.
"Outbid notice"
Hmmmmmmm
Okay so I tossed in another 'silly' bid and moved back to the business at hand. My poverty kept me from being too distracted. Half an hour later another 'ding' from my phone.
Fully expecting another outbid notice I nearly swooned !
I had won ?
Must be a mistake ........
AE27 of Thrace
Obv. AIW KAISARI SEBASTW Laureate head of Caligula left
Rv. BASILEUS ROIMHTALKAS Diademed and draped bust of Rhoemetalkes III left
14.80 grams 27-8mm
RPC 1723

Caligula looking especially deranged/psychotic and Rhoemetalkes III looking very ..... how to say it ? August !
Some evidence of minor smoothing in the fields but otherwise a clean black/brown chocolate patina.
The consigners ticket was included (a well known dealer)
and has a rather stunning 'ask' price on it. I am used to that though .......
"For you ...... half price !"
But my winning bid was a mere 1/7
After commission and $10 shipping it works out to about 1/6
around 17 cents on the dollar .....

I think I can live with that ......

My condolences to the consigner ...
