Please note: I know a lot of people don't like these kinds of coins - I don't see many posts about modern silver collector's coins here. I just like the design and I purchased it to collect, not really as an investment.

Hello all,

I just recently made a purchase of a 2012 Niue 2 oz Silver Amber Room coin. It just came in today, here's a picture:

Modern-Niue-Silver-Coin---Should-I-Grade-It?

I was debating getting the coin graded by NGC. My main concern is that there appears to be a discoloration on the far right side of the coin, next to the amber insert, on the rim. Is it worth returning the coin over this small issue (paying return shipping and restocking fee)? It really looks like it came from the mint that way, maybe residue from whatever they use to attach the insert.

I'd love to get it graded, but am I correct in assuming that discoloration would automatically preclude an MS70 grade? Would it still even be possible to get an MS69? This coin would be expensive to mount, it's 50mm and therefore just barely won't fit in a a standard-size holder. Before I spend $50 getting this coin slabbed, I just thought I'd get others' opinion. There are only three others of this coin graded by NGC: one 66, one 69, and one 70. I don't want to be stuck with a 66 grade, especially with a more expensive grading. Thoughts?

Personally I wouldn't bother.

I have quite some silver bullion coins for the same reason as you have them: to collect them because they're beautiful. I also have a few which I might sell again in case I suddenly find myself in dark, dark days.

I think you shouldn't worry too much about the tiny spot. The difficulty with inserts like the one you have is that they may actually do small damage to coins for a variety of reasons and for what I see, your coin is still in mint condition. It's why I don't like insertions (or colored coins, for the same reason).

I also wouldn't bother too much about getting it graded. I don't think it's worth $50 to get someones paid opinion on this one. Chances are that the grader will damage it, that it gets lost in the mail or that you end up with a grade you don't want: they are human and makes mistakes, too. Lots of examples of that on this forum. Everyone can see that this is one beauty of a coin and as it looks to me (not 100% sure as the picture isn't optimal) this is one beauty of a coin that might indeed give a shot at an MS-70.
