Clinton is my neighbors 8 yr old son. Came a knocking on my door early this morning with a coin he had found in a roll of cents. Not in bad shape, couple of dings here and there plus some discoloration probably from being handled with bare hands. Still a nice find. Noticed what I thought was Machine Doubling on liberty and some of the design. Also noticed the stars definatly have some split points. Need some opinions on this one.

hmmm...that final photo is interesting, although I'm unfamiliar with this coin. The kid found $5 gold in a penny roll? Well, that's nice in of itself!

Guess I should have mentioned it's a 2000 5 dollar gold piece.

The doubling of the star points usually indicates hub doubling. It seems to show both Machine Doubling and the effects of being struck by a doubled die but without the coin in hand, it is tough to be sure. Pictures don't always tell the whole story. A little twist or hop of the die could have distorted the stars. It's possible though.

Thanks,
Bill
